Plot twists are awesome. They give you that feeling of: "Did that really just happen?"
WARNING:::SPOILER:::ALERT
5) Darth Vader's Ultimate Secret (The Empire Strikes Back - 1980)
You know the plot to this one. Don't play that game.

I am your father man. |
OK so, one day Luke Skywalker finds out that his father is really the second most evil and feared person in the galaxy. What a relief. At least he's not the first. I'm of a younger generation so I didn't get that initial shock when Darth Vader says "Luke I am you father," but this is no doubt one of the most unexpected plot twists ever. I mean who would have thought Luke could possibly be related to Darth Vader? Maybe Yoda, but not Vader.
4) Brad Pitt is really Edward Norton (Fight Club - 1999)
|
Cool Poster huh? |
Fight Club is about a guy who knows a guy who starts an underground movement. But it turns out that both guys are really the same guy. Well it's way more than that! The movie plot itself is densely complicated and the acting is phenomenal. There are tons of political and philosophical connotations. If you go back and re-watch the movie you may notice a couple single frames of Brad Pitt randomly appearing. These are actually like subliminal messages meant to show you that there's probably something strange going on. Of course no one ever notices it the first time.
Anyway Norton spends the last half of the movie looking for Pitt and when he can find him he realizes he's actually schitzo and they are the same guy.
3) Keyser Soze is handicapped? (The Usual Suspects - 1995)
In The Usual Suspects, Verbal (Kevin Spacey) takes the audience through a convoluted story in an attempt to explain the details of a chain of crimes that started with a lineup. Now the shock value of this plot twist is not tremendous, but I still consider it kind of like the "original plot twist." Spacey was awarded an oscar for his performance as Verbal Kint and that is what makes this movie all the more awesome. The plot twist itself provides a good example of the "stereotypical" twists. The only guy you didn't think was the one who did it all along.

What?!?! I'm not Soze. Don't mind me, I'm handicapped.
|
Yea. Because no one ever thinks it was the handicapped guy. (I don't trust my one-armed uncle anymore.)
2) So what exactly happened at the end of Shutter Island (2010)?
|
"Did that really just happen?" |
Shutter Island truly captivates me and makes me think like crazy. If you haven't seen this movie, stop right there and go rent it. It is that good. If you have seen it, then that's great cause I don't have to explain the plot to you.
Leo's character thinks he's a detective who has come to investigate Shutter Island, but in reality he's the one being investigated. In the end, it turns out he's the one who actually killed his children and, you guessed it, he's a psychopath. This is no doubt one of the most shocking plot twists in recent years. And the movie's tense environment only builds up the wonderful twists. The performances here are typical of these actors, but they are not too over the top. No oscar winners here, but just the right amount of awesome to make this movie perfect. The only downside to this movie is its slow pace, but the twist more than makes up for it.
Something else about this movie. The intense philosophical questions it poses just make you think. Did Leo's character actually remember that he was the murderer in the end, or was he still repressing it to the point that he didn't even remember anymore.
1) Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale and Michael Caine in one movie (The Prestige - 2006)
|
Awesome movie. Do check it out. |
Ok ok, I'll admit it. The end of this movie still gives me chills. The two main characters in this movie battled it out to see who was the better magician. This rivalry is one for the history books. When Alfred does a trick the Robert can't figure out, he goes on a wild goose chase to try and find a way to replicate the trick. He does find a way. And the answer is far darker than he could have imagined. The trick was simple. The Alfred had a twin. He would make it seem like he teleported from one spot to another. Something impossible to do without a double or real magic. Robert was convinced that it was the same guy that came out the other side and therefore could have never been a double. Robert ends up cloning and teleporting himself. He would also drown as soon as the trick was over with.
One day Alfred got curious and went backstage to see how he did. Of course he was framed with murder and Robert was never seen again. So now both Robert and Alfred are both dead. Or are they?
Turns out Alfred had a twin and one of Robert's clones is still alive. That is until Alfred (twin) kills him. But I still think there's another clone walking about somewhere.
